what is a dongle for? wireless network help please!?

I just recently got a new pc computer but it does not have any type of wireless connection. I have a router at my house so I can get internet to my laptop with, but I need to know what I need to buy to get wireless internet on my new pc with. Does this make sense? Anywhoooooo- someone told me to buy a dongle and that would allow me to access my internet wirelessly on my new pc. What is a dongle and is this correct? What is the difference between a dongle and a usb wireless adapter? Thank you for your time!

1. By the word Dongle, he meant a USB wireless adapter, or data card, or wireless modem... that you can get from mobile phone companies. All are same.
