Wireless Troubleshooting

how do i troubleshoot file sharing on my wireless network?

i have 2 comps hooked up to a router one is wired one is wireless. they both can access the internet. i have tried the network wizard, created a workgroup, turn on file sharing, shared folders on both, i cant map a drive and i time out when i ping each other. is there something i am over looking? when i try to map a drive i get an message telling me to contact the admin, which i am on both comps and router.

  1. Have you checked WEP settings on the router homepage? Go to start, run, type in "cmd" without quotes, click ok. Type in "ipconfig/all" without quotes, push enter. Read the line with "default gateway". Type in "exit" without quotes. Push enter. Go to that website listed for default gateway IP address. Check WEP settings here. Do you have any firewalls on the computer, such as Norton? If so, allow that firewall to allow access to files on workgroup computers. Just to make sure, both computers are in same workgroup correct? How many user names do you have on your computer? Try logging in as someone else. To check your administrative priveleges, go to start, control panel, users. Check to make sure you are an administrator.
  2. Please check on both computers, look for the firewall program (Windows firewall, antivirus firewall, etc) and disable them for the time being, the firewall will block ping and file sharing access if not configured correctly. Have a look on following file sharing articles, might be able to help you to solve the problem.
