Tips for how to troubleshoot wireless network connection problem (works on one but not another router)?

My old Windows XP notebook with a PCMCIA wireless network card connects fine to a friend's wireless router. At my home it finds the router, but after I enter the WAP code it is not able to connect to the router (rather attempts to connect to other weak signal routers in the area). I use Windows to manage the wireless connections. Any ideas for what to look for or how to troubleshoot this? I've reinstalled the software, rebooted, tried to manage the connections with the wireless adapter's software but to no avail. Thanks in advance!
