Wireless Troubleshooting

I cannot connect to internet with my linksys wireless router on my desktop but our laptop has no problem?

I'm wondering about the usb that I have in in the internet port. it doesn't click in. Could I be using the wrong kind of usb cable? I need some troubleshooting tips because I'm ready to throw this router out the window.

  1. Laptop may have built in wireless card. Desktop probably doesn't.
  2. IS YOUR WIRELESS ADAPTER INSTALLED AND CONNECTED.....?
  3. You shouldnt be using a usb cable to begin with. Use a networking cable
  4. If the cable doesn't fit snugly it's the wrong type of cable or you're plugging it into the wrong type of port.
  5. I had this problem too but when I went to the technician he just laughed at me because I only had the Wireless switch on my laptop switched off. If you have an acer laptop (like I do) there is a side button which you can press to enable or disable wireless connection. If the wireless connection is on and you still have no internet then you should check the router's LED wireless light and see if it is turned on
  6. If you are doing a wired connection you do not use a USB cable. You use an ethernet cable from the network connection on your computer to one of the LAN ports on the back of the router. If the laptop is functioning fine wirelessly then you know the router works, the problem must be with your connection.
  7. You need to have either an ethernet cable connected from the router to the computer or a wireless adapter installed in your computer. If you go over the instructions in the manual they usually have a layout on how you need to connect everything...
