- If you both have an active firewall everything should be fine as far as either computer being hacked however the broadband speed or usage may not be adequate if you are both downloading or playing games. You may need to tell your flat mate to go halves with you in a higher broadband usage with more speed. Good luck Mel ;-)
- You can set up your own network and password protect it. Our seven (7) computers 2 macs and five windows all play very nice on our password protected broadband. I see my neighbors DSL all the time, but theirs is slower than ours, so we just leave them alone. If they try to use our DSL, they cannot--no password. They are happy (they have never seen our speed) and our network and wireless are happy. Everybody gets to the internet, and we get no viruses. You can setup your network with a password and share it with your flatmate, if you like. Or you can charge them half the cost and then give them the password.
- first off: if your computer is windows vista the ONLY folder that can be seen and accessed across the network is the public folder (and thats only if you enable file and printer sharing) if its XP the you need to enable file and printer sharing then choose which folders or drives to share. i also belive (and only belive) that you still need to grant acess to your public folder with log-ins for vista. in vista if you go to the network and shareing center you can disable public folder sharing, and file sharing ;)
