Wireless Troubleshooting

Can I setup a second wireless router to get connections in other parts of my home?

Right now I have a wireless router setup on one side of my home but I do not get any connectivity on the other side of my house. Could I hook up another wireless router on the side of my home where I receive a weaker signal to improve my connection?

  1. you can attach another router number 2 into the router number 1
  2. what you are looking for is a repeater. or i guess you could get another modem/router. that would work too
  3. You could, but your computer would have to switch from one access point to another. By buying two separate routers you will probably run into that issue. However, you can buy a wireless range extender, which simply amplifies the signal. Here's a Linksys model: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1533895&CatId=374
  4. You only need one router, at your gateway (or cable modem). You will need to intall another wireless access point. These are a lot less expensive than a router/wireless access point combo. There are 'range extenders' on the market, but they do not work very well at all. I recommend you setup a wireless access point and use a cable to connect it to your existing router.
  5. Be careful setting this up. Putting 2 routers on the same network is a bad idea unless you know what you are doing. The easy way to solve the problem is using a wireless repeater. Put it where the signal starts to weaken and it will receive the signal and rebroadcast it. The only way to get a second router to work is to reconfigure it as a wireless switch and connect it to your first router with a cable. That kind of defeats what you are trying to do. Get a repeater
